The Most Beautiful Road Trip to Ait Ben Haddou

Ait Ben Haddou is a captivating and historic destination that you don’t want to miss during your travels in Morocco. As the most famous and visited Kasbah in Morocco, Ait Ben Haddou, also known as the fortress of the Glaoua, holds an important place in the country’s rich heritage. This UNESCO World Heritage site, located near the Ounila Valley, was constructed in the 11th century by the Glaoui, a tribe that once inhabited Morocco’s southern region. The Glaoui were a combination of Arabs and Berbers who, despite their differences in culture and language, joined forces to protect themselves and their leader or king against other tribes. They built Ait Ben Haddou as a fortress, using clay and hay bales to construct the walls.

A hilltop is where Ait Ben Haddou is located, and to fully explore this fortified village, you’ll need to hike to the top for a breathtaking panoramic view of the area. The ruins of the film studios that were formerly located here, where popular TV programs Game of Thrones and films like Gladiator were produced, may be seen as you ascend. Today, Ait Ben Haddou remains a fully Berber village and a fortified one since the 11th century during the era of Almoravids.
